Visibility is essential for the hostages.

An immersive exhibit depicting the harrowing experience of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza is set to come to Boston City Hall Plaza. With more than 100 people, including Americans, still being held captive, the exhibit aims to shed light on the conditions faced by the hostages over the past 10 months.

Visitors to the exhibit will walk through a shipping container adorned with faces of hostages and hear audio recordings and see video footage from inside the tunnels where they are being held. The exhibit, designed in consultation with hostages released in November, features a simulated living area complete with a mattress and bathroom to convey the harsh conditions endured by the hostages.

The lead organizer of the exhibit, Douglas Hauer, stressed the importance of raising awareness about the hostages’ plight and advocating for their visibility. The exhibit, which has been showcased in Geneva and Washington, D.C., aims to reject terror and highlight the vulnerability of the hostages.

Although there have been concerns about potential disruptions by anti-Israel and antisemitic protesters, Hauer has worked closely with local law enforcement to ensure security measures are in place. The City of Boston and the Boston Police Department have been supportive partners in bringing the exhibit to fruition.

The exhibit, developed by The Forum for Families of Hostages, will be in Boston for a limited time and is wheelchair accessible. Backpacks and personal items will not be allowed inside the exhibit area for security reasons. This immersive experience seeks to educate the public about the ongoing hostage situation in Gaza and the need to speak out against terrorism.
