Portugal has sent a special task force of 80 firefighters to Madeira to help fight a blaze that has been burning for three days. In Turkey, firefighters continue to battle five wildfires for a fourth day, with over 131 fires reported in the past week. Authorities blame low humidity, strong winds, and high temperatures, with climate change also a factor. Thousands have been evacuated, and no casualties reported. Agriculture Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı said 69 wildfires have been contained but five remain active. Four people have been detained in connection with the fires, and the General Directorate of Forestry warns against lighting fires for the next 10 days. In Turkey, a fire threatened World War I memorials and graves at the Gallipoli battle site. In Portugal, residents have been evacuated for safety reasons. Madeira’s Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection reports that 50 families have received support. The fire, which broke out on Wednesday, has spread to neighboring parishes. Authorities are working with 54 operatives on the ground, supported by vehicles, helicopters, and other resources. The situation remains critical, and caution is advised through the weekend. International assistance is not yet needed, but the teams will continue to respond to any incidents day and night.
