Gina Chase, lost hiker on Colorado spiritual retreat, located after 4 days

Gina Chase, a 53-year-old hiker from Victoria, Canada, was found safe on Saturday after going missing during a solo hike near Lone Cone, Colorado. She had left a spiritual retreat organized by the Animas Valley Institute on Wednesday and was reported missing the next day when she did not return to camp. Chase, who was part of a group that was discouraged from bringing cell phones and were told to fast before going on their solo journeys, was found in the “targeted search area” by authorities.

San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters expressed relief at Chase’s safe return, praising the responders for their dedication. He also emphasized the importance of bringing technology for communications and not starving oneself, even if a guide service suggests otherwise. The Animas Valley Institute, which organized the retreat, has been running backcountry programs since 1980 without serious incidents and released a statement expressing their commitment to supporting Chase’s family during this difficult time.

The Animas Valley Institute, based in Durango, Colorado, offers guided immersions into nature and psyche, including Soulcraft intensives and vision fasts. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and preparedness when embarking on solo hikes and wilderness adventures.
