Extreme heat at a Colorado airshow led to at least 10 people being hospitalized and about 100 needing medical treatment. The Pikes Peak Airshow in Colorado Springs faced intense heat, with the majority of people taken to the hospital for heat-related illnesses. The Colorado Springs Fire Department had a plan in place and worked closely with event organizers to ensure swift and professional handling of the situation. Sunday was expected to be another hot day and attendees were encouraged to stay hydrated and bring necessary items like water bottles, hats, sunscreen, and umbrellas.
Factors that increase the risk of heat-related illness include high humidity, high elevation, strenuous activity, age, pregnancy, obesity, heart disease, poor circulation, fever, mental illness, dehydration, sunburn, and prescription drug and alcohol use. Heatstroke is the deadliest heat illness and symptoms include a high body temperature, hot and red skin, fast pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and loss of consciousness. In case of heatstroke, it is important to call 911, move the person to a cool location, and lower their body temperature with cool clothing or a bath. It is advised not to give water or anything to drink to a person suffering from heatstroke.
