Acting mayor in charge of Boston as Michelle Wu attends Democratic National Convention out of town

Boston City Clerk Alex Geourntas has been appointed acting mayor while Mayor Michelle Wu is away as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention. This decision was made because City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune is also at the convention, leaving the city clerk as the next in line to assume the role of acting mayor.

Geourntas confirmed that he received notifications of both the mayor and council president’s absence from the city, leading to his appointment as acting mayor. This temporary change went into effect on Sunday night and will last until Friday afternoon. As acting mayor, Geourntas will have the powers of the mayor in matters that cannot be delayed.

Last year, then-City Council President Ed Flynn also served as acting mayor on two occasions while Wu was on vacation. During his temporary role, Flynn focused on addressing public safety issues, particularly in the Mass and Cass area.

Wu’s absence this week coincides with a public safety incident at Franklin Park, where five people were shot during the annual Dominican Festival. This incident adds pressure to Geourntas as he steps into the role of acting mayor.

Geourntas is known for his dedication and commitment to the city of Boston, and residents can rest assured that the city will be in capable hands during Mayor Wu’s absence. His temporary appointment as acting mayor highlights the importance of ensuring seamless governance even in the mayor’s absence.
