Rick’s Place is a youth grief support program that offers free peer support groups for young people ages 5-18 and their caregivers. Established in 2007 in memory of Rick Thorpe, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, Rick’s Place provides a space for families to remember loved ones and avoid feelings of isolation. The program is available to families in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut at no charge. To participate, individuals can contact Rick’s Place at info@ricksplacema.org or 413-279-2010.

In addition, virtual cancer support groups led by oncology social worker Camille St. Onge are being offered for patients and caregivers facing cancer diagnoses. These support groups aim to help individuals cope with the challenges of cancer through various sessions tailored to specific needs. These groups are currently meeting virtually and are made possible through funds raised by the Walk of Champions.

Furthermore, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is offering online and phone support groups for individuals facing mental health challenges, as well as specialized groups for the LGBTQIA+ community and black and brown communities. NAMI Family Support Groups provide a structured model for families to share experiences and wisdom while offering a sense of hope for loved ones with mental health conditions.

Various other support groups, such as the Michael J. Dias Foundation for substance use disorder support and Survivor of Suicide Loss for individuals coping with suicide loss, are also available in different locations throughout Western Massachusetts. Overall, these support groups offer a sense of community, resources, and hope for individuals and families facing various challenges.
