Chinese national in Massachusetts arrested by ICE for multiple sex crimes

Chinese national Yao Zhang was arrested on an immigration detainer by ICE for multiple indecent assault charges dating back to 2022 and 2024. Zhang, 43, faced charges of indecent assault and battery on victims over 14 years old in Massachusetts. The assaults allegedly took place during massages given by Zhang. After his initial arrest in 2022, Zhang was released without bail but had restrictions imposed, including surrendering his passport and not working as a masseuse. Following his 2024 arrest, bail was set at $5,000 per case and Zhang was eventually taken into ICE custody. Zhang had been previously arrested by U.S. Border Patrol in 2019 for unlawfully entering the country, and was released on an immigration bond which was revoked following his latest arrest. ICE stated that detentions are not punitive, but rather based on factors like criminal record, immigration history, and potential threat to public safety. ERO Boston emphasized their commitment to prioritizing public safety by removing noncitizen offenders from New England communities. Zhang’s deportation before facing criminal proceedings in Cambridge or Dedham was not immediately confirmed by ICE.
