The Federal Aviation Administration has allocated $366,030 to aid in the removal of trees obstructing the flight path of Runway 15 at Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport. The grant was accepted by Westfield city councilors during their Aug. 15 meeting, with City Councilor Bridget Matthews-Kane noting that this is part of a larger effort to address issues with the runway.
The funds will go towards obtaining avigation easements on private properties located on Southampton Road near the end of the runway. The presence of tall trees in this area has been limiting the full use of the 5,000-foot paved length of Runway 15, leaving approximately 490 feet of the runway unusable. By removing these trees, planes will have a clearer approach to the runway, allowing for safer and more efficient operations.
This grant marks the second phase of a four-stage process aimed at improving Runway 15 at the Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport. City officials are hopeful that with continued support from the FAA and the Department of Transportation, they will be able to address the remaining issues and ensure that the runway meets all necessary safety standards.
