Lionsgate has pulled the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s new film, Megalopolis, after it was found to include false and misleading quotes from critics. The video featured fabricated reviews for Coppola’s past films, such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, leading to backlash from critics and fans.
Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri pointed out that many of the quotes were made up and not found in the original reviews of the films. Lionsgate issued an apology for the error, admitting they “screwed up” and announcing the immediate recall of the trailer.
Despite the controversy, Megalopolis premiered at Cannes to mixed reviews, with The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw calling it “bloated, boring, and bafflingly shallow.” Starring Adam Driver, the film cost Coppola $120m to make and has been picked up by Lionsgate for distribution in the US.
Coppola’s conduct on set has also come under scrutiny, with reports of unprofessional behavior, including attempting to kiss female extras. The Guardian has reached out to Lionsgate for comment on the situation.
As the film gears up for its September release, critics are warning that attacking critics may not be the best marketing strategy. Fake quotes and disputes with reviewers could harm the film’s reception, as critics play a crucial role in promoting and supporting new releases. Critics argue that authentic reviews and honest feedback are essential for building a positive reception for Megalopolis.
