Obama attracts over 21 million viewers

Nielsen reported that more viewers watched the second night of the Democratic National Convention compared to the first night. The Tuesday lineup, which featured speeches from Michelle and Barack Obama, drew an estimated audience of nearly 20.6 million viewers, slightly higher than the 20 million viewers on Monday night. The ratings across networks’ event coverage showed an average of 21.9 million viewers while Barack Obama was speaking. Both nights of the Democratic convention had larger audiences than the first two nights of the Republican National Convention.

While Nielsen ratings do not account for online streaming viewers, experts note a decline in convention viewership due to the events becoming predictable. However, unexpected elements can draw in audiences, with this election season being described as fierce political reality shows by one expert. The final day of conventions typically draws the most viewers, according to Nielsen data.

The convention is being held at the United Center in Chicago and is airing live on its website from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. Live coverage is also available on YouTube by USA TODAY each night of the convention. The household rating for the second night of the 2024 Democratic convention was 12.4, and historical Nielsen ratings for previous conventions show fluctuations in viewership across the days of the events.
