Man arrested in Hingham for allegedly following teen girl is registered sex offender

53-year-old Edmund Chance, a level 3 sex offender with a history of predatory behavior, was arrested in Hingham, Massachusetts for failing to register with the Sex Offender Registry Board. Chance was also wanted for questioning in connection with a disturbing incident where he followed a 17-year-old girl while she was jogging. Despite offering her a ride, the teen declined and called 911 when Chance continued to follow her.

Massachusetts State Police received information about Chance’s whereabouts and apprehended him in Hingham. He was brought to Hingham District Court where he was arraigned and bail was set at $2.5 million cash. A plea of not guilty was entered on Chance’s behalf.

Level 3 sex offenders are considered to pose a high risk to the public due to their likelihood of reoffending, according to state guidelines. Chance’s prior convictions for rape and kidnapping further support this assessment. It is crucial for communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities, especially when it involves individuals with a history of predatory actions.

This arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing sex offender registry laws and monitoring high-risk individuals who may pose a threat to public safety. The swift actions of Massachusetts State Police in apprehending Chance underscore the commitment to protecting the community from potential predators.
