Heavy fighting in the eastern Ukrainian town of New York has led to chaos, destruction, and death as Russian forces push towards the town of Toretsk. The town, once home to a Communist-era plant and 3,000 residents, now lies in ruins with shallow graves dotting the landscape.
Despite Moscow claiming to have taken New York, pockets of resistance remain, and the situation remains volatile. The ongoing conflict has led to the destruction of homes and infrastructure, leaving many residents either fleeing or unable to move.
The fighting in New York is part of Russia’s advance on the Toretsk agglomeration, a densely-populated industrial area where Russian forces are making significant progress. The fear of more towns being destroyed looms large for residents like Lesya Gabar from Mykolaivka, who worries about the safety of her hometown.
In Slovyansk, a city northeast of Pokrovsk, university student Alina shares similar concerns about safety and the influx of refugees from Russian-occupied areas. The economic gains for Kyiv from the occupied regions have been wiped out, according to analysts.
The war in eastern Ukraine, now in its third year, has ravaged industrial areas, leading to the destruction of steel plants and factories. The conflict shows no signs of abating as Russian forces continue their advance, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.
