Suspected Solingen attacker arrested, regional minister confirms in Germany mass stabbing case

A man suspected of carrying out a stabbing rampage in Solingen, Germany, killing three people, was taken into police custody following a manhunt that led to his arrest. Authorities had made two earlier arrests that were not connected to the crime. Police declined to comment on the situation immediately. The alleged perpetrator did not appear to know his victims, leading prosecutors to not rule out a terrorist motive.

After detaining a 15-year-old in connection to the crime, another arrest was made at a refugee home in Solingen. Eight people were injured in the attack, which occurred at a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary. The assailant used a knife to indiscriminately attack people, sparking fear and prompting festival-goers to flee the scene.

Authorities, including Germany’s interior minister Reul, urged against speculation on the perpetrator’s motives or background. The festival was supposed to continue through the weekend but was canceled following the attack. Witnesses and victims described a chaotic scene of bloodshed and panic. Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed shock over the incident and called for swift justice for the perpetrator.

Germany has seen a rise in knife violence, prompting the government to take steps towards fighting this type of crime. The tragic event has left Solingen and the nation in mourning, as investigators work to gather evidence and uncover the motives behind the deadly attack.
