The Boston Red Sox made some roster moves in between games of Monday’s doubleheader, activating right-hander Justin Slaten from the injured list and optioning right-hander Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester. They also added left-hander Bailey Horn as the 27th man for the second game.
Slaten had been sidelined with right elbow inflammation since July 9 but has been impressive this season, posting a 3.38 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. His return is expected to provide much-needed help to a struggling bullpen.
Winckowski, who has a 4.37 ERA in 30 appearances this season, pitched in the first game of the doubleheader and threw a scoreless ninth inning in a 4-1 loss for the Red Sox.
Horn, who has a 6.48 ERA in 14 games this season, will join the bullpen as the second left-hander for Monday night’s game.
These moves come as the Red Sox look to strengthen their pitching staff for the remainder of the season and improve their chances of making a postseason run. Fans will be eager to see how Slaten’s return impacts the team and how the bullpen performs with the addition of Horn.
