What’s next for the Uncommitted movement? Commitment to persevering for ceasefire continues

The Uncommitted National Movement, a coalition of Palestinian, anti-war, and progressive groups, expressed disappointment over the Democratic National Convention (DNC) ending without a Palestinian representative taking the main stage. The movement was formed in protest of U.S. funding for the war in Gaza and garnered support from voters who chose “uncommitted” during the Democratic primaries. Despite efforts to have a Palestinian speaker at the convention, their requests were denied, leading to protests outside the event.

Advocates of the movement believe there is a disconnect between the Democratic party and some constituents, particularly young voters and members of marginalized communities, who feel betrayed by President Biden’s decision to continue funding the war. The coalition is demanding an immediate ceasefire, an arms embargo, and an end to the long-term siege on Gaza.

During the DNC, Vice President Kamala Harris affirmed the U.S.’s support for Israel, further fueling the movement’s discontent. Despite setbacks, including being denied a speaker at the convention, the Uncommitted National Movement vows to continue its work and pressure politicians to end U.S. aid to Israel. The movement has received support from various organizations, including labor unions and faith leaders, and is determined to amplify Palestinian voices and push for policy change.

The movement invited Harris’ team to meet with Palestinian leaders and individuals impacted by the Gaza conflict by Sept. 15. As the November election approaches, the coalition plans to maintain its momentum and build a mass movement to force change regarding the conflict in Gaza.
