Donald Trump faces a new indictment in the 2020 election subversion case after the US Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution. The new indictment filed by special counsel Jack Smith dropped allegations that Trump attempted to pressure the US Justice Department to overturn his defeat. The grand jury that issued the updated indictment had not heard evidence in the case before. The new charges remain the same, but remove allegations against Trump related to his interactions with the Justice Department, as well as the inclusion of Jeffrey Clark as a co-conspirator.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are set to sit down for their first joint interview on CNN on Thursday, marking Harris’ first interview in over a month. The updated indictment against Trump comes as he agreed to the rules of a debate with Harris on September 10. Trump is also selling digital trading cards and has promised a physical card with a piece of his suit from his debate with Joe Biden to those who purchase 15 cards.
In other news, the Biden administration suffered a setback in allowing undocumented spouses of US citizens to remain in the country, and there are concerns of a potential superspreader event at the recent Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Democrats have criticized the convention for not imposing health-related requirements for attendees, leading to reports of Covid-19 infections among campaign staff members.
