A bald eagle in Missouri, originally thought to be injured, was found to be too fat to fly after an X-ray revealed it had a raccoon in its stomach. Officials from the Missouri Department of Conservation captured the bird near Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield and temporarily took it into custody. The X-ray at Dickerson Park Zoo showed no injury, but the bird was simply overfed. The raccoon was suspected to be roadkill that the eagle had consumed. The eagle was released back into the wild in accordance with state and federal laws. Fernando Cervantes Jr. reported the story for USA TODAY.
