The Cambridge Public Schools district announced that allegations of a toxic workplace against Graham & Parks principal Kathleen Smith were found to be unsubstantiated after an external investigation. The investigation was prompted by concerns raised by parents about Smith’s management style and policies, as well as her past record in another school district. Despite an internal investigation in Newton Public Schools that found a toxic working environment under Smith’s leadership, the external investigation in Cambridge did not support these claims.
Interim Superintendent David Murphy stated that while some staff reported positive experiences under Smith’s leadership, others had less favorable experiences. The district plans to provide additional support to foster a more inclusive and constructive learning environment at Graham & Parks School. Murphy also announced that his office will have a greater role at the school, with a special advisor based there to facilitate discussions with staff and parents.
This conclusion comes after a series of leadership changes in the Cambridge school district, including the termination of former Superintendent Victoria Greer. Greer was removed from her position after being voted out by the School Committee due to concerns about her management and communication with stakeholders. The hiring of Smith was also questioned as part of the broader issues facing the district. With the investigation results and additional support measures in place, the district hopes to move forward with confidence in the leadership of Graham & Parks School.
