Former New England Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak has weighed in on the ongoing quarterback competition within the team. As Jerod Mayo prepares to name a Week 1 starter between veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye, Zolak expressed his preference for starting the highly touted third overall pick, Maye, right away.
During a segment on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand,” Zolak made it clear that he believes Maye is the best quarterback on the team and should start in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite the expectation that Brissett will start initially and eventually hand things over to Maye, Zolak emphasized that the rookie has outperformed Brissett throughout training camp.
Zolak criticized the idea of waiting a few weeks before starting Maye, arguing that the difference between Week 1 and Week 3 is negligible. He stressed that Maye should be given the starting role as he has clearly won the competition with his superior talent and performance.
While there are concerns about the quality of the Patriots’ offensive line and the readiness of a rookie quarterback, Zolak firmly believes that Maye is the best choice to lead the team. With Mayo acknowledging Maye’s outperformance, Zolak’s stance is clear: Maye is not the second-best quarterback, but rather the best option for the Patriots moving forward. It remains to be seen how the team will ultimately handle the quarterback situation as the season approaches.
