Ukraine has issued a warning to Belarus following reports of significant personnel and weaponry being concentrated along Ukraine’s northern border with Belarus. In a statement, Ukraine’s foreign ministry stated that any violation of its state border by Belarus would be met with ‘all necessary measures to exercise the right to self-defense’, as guaranteed by the UN Charter. This includes targeting troop concentrations, military facilities, and supply routes in Belarus.
The warning comes amidst concerns about military exercises near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant, which Ukraine says poses a “global security” threat due to the proximity to the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. The presence of former Wagner PMC troops in the area has also raised alarms.
Belarus had previously allowed Russian troops to use its territory as a launchpad for their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. With tensions escalating along the border, Kyiv is calling on Minsk to withdraw forces to a safe distance. The two countries share a 1,084 km-long border, making the situation a cause for international concern.
The escalating situation between Ukraine and Belarus underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with potential implications for global security. As Ukraine remains vigilant against any potential threats to its sovereignty, the international community will be closely monitoring developments in the region.
