Westfield High School principals prefer limits over cellphone ban

Westfield schools have developed individual cell phone use policies thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski announced this at a recent School Committee meeting. Each school above the elementary level, including Westfield Intermediate School, Westfield Middle School, Westfield High School, and Westfield Technical Academy, was able to create its own policy. Principal Jesse McMillan highlighted the challenges faced in crafting these policies, as they are a hot topic with various opinions. He emphasized the need for language that works for everyone, resulting in purposely broad language in the policies. The policies take into account the different challenges at each level of student development and the unique characteristics of each school building. The goal is to strike a balance that addresses the concerns of students, parents, and staff. The feedback from the School Committee will help fine-tune the policies to ensure they are effective and meet the needs of the school community. Overall, the grant has allowed Westfield schools to take a proactive approach to managing cell phone use on campus, promoting a positive and productive learning environment.
