Former Stoughton Police Officer Matthew Farwell was arrested by the Boston FBI SWAT team for allegedly killing Sandra Birchmore, a woman he is accused of having a sexual relationship with since she was a minor. The arrest was made without incident and further details were expected to be revealed at the federal courthouse at 1:45 p.m.
According to prosecutors, Farwell is accused of strangling Birchmore to death around February 1, 2021. Birchmore had joined the Police Explorer’s Academy, a youth program taught by Farwell, when she was just 12 years old in 2010. The indictment states that Farwell started raping her before she turned 16.
In December 2020, Birchmore discovered she was pregnant and told Farwell he was the father. A friend of Birchmore contacted the police department in January 2021 to report Farwell’s actions, but it is alleged that a police department employee warned Farwell about the complaint. Tragically, Birchmore would die less than two weeks later.
The case continues to unfold as a developing story. The arrest of a former police officer for such shocking crimes has sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about the protection of minors in police programs. The Boston FBI SWAT team’s quick action in apprehending Farwell underscores the importance of swift and effective law enforcement in cases of alleged violence and abuse.
