The Ministry of Health in Andalusia has reported a total of five deaths due to the West Nile virus, with 10 more individuals estimated to be infected. The recent deaths in Seville have raised concerns over the spread of the virus in Spain, particularly in towns near the Guadalquivir River where infectious mosquitoes have been found.
Residents in affected areas, such as Coria del Río, have called for more effective measures to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the population. The World Health Organisation notes that 80% of those infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms, but individuals over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing severe forms of the disease.
The virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites and is most common in birds, although people and animals can also become infected. To protect themselves from mosquito bites, experts recommend using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and staying indoors during peak mosquito activity times at dusk and dawn.
As the number of cases continues to rise in Andalusia, authorities are urging residents to take precautions to prevent further infections and protect vulnerable populations. The situation is being closely monitored to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure the health and safety of all residents in the region.
