The Westfield Conservation Commission is currently investigating a large clearing of trees off Medeiros Way, which was done in preparation for a cannabis-growing facility. Conservation Director Anna Meassick presented aerial photos to the commission, showing that a significant number of trees, present in 2020, were no longer there in 2021. The plot of land is owned by L7 Holdings LLC, managed by Jeffry Baksa, and the clearing was done within the buffer zone of a wetland.
The Commission is now seeking evidence that proper restoration work was completed after the trees were removed. Meassick emphasized the importance of following regulations and guidelines to ensure the protection of wetlands and the surrounding environment. The Commission is working to determine if any violations occurred during the clearing process and will take necessary action to address the situation.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible land management practices, especially in areas close to wetlands. Ensuring that proper restoration work is done after tree removal helps maintain the ecological balance and prevents potential harm to local ecosystems.
The Conservation Commission’s investigation highlights the need for adherence to regulations and environmental guidelines when undertaking land development projects. The Commission will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate steps to ensure that the land is properly restored and protected in accordance with conservation laws.
