College student in Chicago planned militant action in support of Armenia

Former University of Chicago sophomore Aram Brunson has been charged with lying to federal officials after inadvertently setting off a bomb in his dorm room while allegedly trying to conceal his involvement in militant action in support of Armenian causes. Brunson, who is believed to be living in Armenia, has been accused of engaging in violent extremist activity and making videos teaching others to make explosive devices.

After an explosion in his dorm room in early 2023, Brunson told authorities he caused it while trying to make a flare, but further investigation revealed that he had been involved in bomb-making activities. He had also made videos planning revolutionary action, including discussions of funding such activities through drug sales or robberies.

Brunson was attempting to travel to Armenia when his luggage set off explosive alarms and traces of explosive material were found. Subsequent searches of his belongings and bedroom revealed evidence of bomb-making materials. Despite an arrest warrant being issued, Brunson had already left the U.S. at the time.

He has been charged with falsifying information and making false statements to federal officials, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Prosecutors allege that Brunson’s bomb-making activities were linked to his desire to take militant action against Azerbaijanis and others involved in conflicts with ethnic Armenians.
