Judge allows Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis to postpone prison in order to complete film

Former Boston Celtics forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis has been granted a temporary reprieve from starting his three-year prison term for a fraud conviction in Manhattan federal court. Judge Valerie E. Caproni allowed Davis to delay reporting to prison until October 22 to complete a documentary film project on his life.

Davis, a member of the Celtics’ 2008 title team, was convicted of defrauding an insurance plan for NBA players and their families along with about two dozen others. His lawyer cited difficulties in arranging interviews with professional teammates and colleagues for the film project as the reason for the delay.

The film revenue from the project could help Davis satisfy $80,000 in restitution he owes to a victim. At his sentencing, Davis spoke about the struggles he faced after a career-ending injury and financial difficulties. Despite being a successful basketball player, Davis had not fully cooperated with Probation Department officers leading up to his sentencing.

A federal prosecutor described Davis as one of the most successful basketball players caught in the insurance conspiracy, highlighting his championship win with the Celtics in 2008. Davis, now 38, played in the NBA from 2007 to 2015 for teams like the Celtics, Orlando Magic, and the Los Angeles Clippers after a successful college career at Louisiana State University.
