PVTA employees decide to go on strike

Transportation workers in Hampden County voted to go on strike against the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority’s bus operations contractor, DGR Management. The strike, scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, was approved by a majority vote of 192 to 7 by members of the Amalgamated Transportation Union Local 448. The workers, which include drivers, mechanics, clerical staff, supervisors, and forepersons, gathered at the Union Hall in Springfield for a day-long voting session.

The decision to strike comes after months of negotiations between the workers and DGR Management failed to reach a satisfactory agreement. According to union representatives, the main issues at stake are fair wages, benefits, and working conditions for the employees. Despite efforts to avoid a strike, including the involvement of a federal mediator, the two sides were unable to come to an agreement, leading to the union’s decision to take action.

The strike is expected to have a significant impact on public transportation in the area, as the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority operates essential bus services throughout Hampden County. The union has stated that it is committed to standing together in solidarity until a fair resolution is reached with management.

The strike is set to begin in just a few hours, and both workers and management are preparing for the potential disruptions it may cause. The union has urged passengers to seek alternative transportation options during the strike and has expressed hope that a resolution can be reached quickly to minimize the impact on the community.
