Steward secures last-minute agreements for acquisition of St. Elizabeth’s and Good Samaritan hospitals

Steward Health Care has signed purchase agreements for Boston Medical Center to acquire Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. The agreements were filed following the bankruptcy of Steward, with the total suite of deals, including the sale of four other facilities in Massachusetts, expected to be presented for U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval.

The terms of the deal between Steward and BMC for Good Samaritan and St. Elizabeth’s were not immediately clear, with a purchase price of $140 million mentioned in court filings. The agreement does not resolve the issue of the St. Elizabeth’s real estate, with the state planning to take the property by eminent domain.

BMC Health System CEO Dr. Alastair Bell expressed enthusiasm for integrating Good Samaritan Medical Center into their system, highlighting their mission of providing quality and equitable access to care. Bell praised the leadership of the Healey administration in averting a public health crisis and securing high-quality healthcare for the communities.

The document filed by Steward indicates that BMC expects funding support from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The purchase agreements are seen as a positive step towards ensuring ongoing healthcare services in these communities. The deals are expected to be finalized pending court approval.
