Greg Skomal tags more great white sharks as Cape Cod enters peak shark season: ‘Practice shark safety’

Shark researchers are reminding the public that peak shark season is here on Cape Cod as summer winds down and school starts. September and October are typically busy months for great white shark activity, with last year seeing high numbers of shark detections during this time. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is urging beachgoers to be #SharkSmart and review safety guidelines before heading into the ocean, especially during Labor Day weekend.

Great white sharks hunt for seals along the Cape coast during the summer and fall, feeding close to shore. Tagged sharks are frequently detected on the Conservancy’s receivers, with October having the highest number of detections last year at 40,322. Shark researcher Greg Skomal has been tagging sharks out on the water, placing acoustic tags to monitor their movements.

The Conservancy advises people to pay attention to beach signs, listen to lifeguards, and follow safety tips as white shark activity peaks off Cape Cod. It is crucial to be aware of the potential presence of sharks in the area during August to October. The public is encouraged to stay informed about shark sightings and take necessary precautions while enjoying the beach during the remaining summer months.
