An explosion in the Qala-e-Bakhtiar area of southern Kabul has resulted in the death of at least six people and the injury of 13 others. The attack was carried out by a person wearing explosives on their body, according to Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Violence has decreased in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, but the ISIL affiliate in Khorasan Province remains active and continues to target civilians, foreigners, and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks. This group, which poses a significant security threat in Afghanistan, has also targeted Shia communities.
One of the most notable attacks by the ISIL-linked group since the Taliban’s takeover was a suicide bombing at an education center in a Shia neighborhood of Kabul, which resulted in the deaths of at least 53 people, including 46 girls and young women.
The Taliban government has claimed to have suppressed ISIL in the country, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stating that no such groups exist in Afghanistan that pose a threat to anyone. However, the recent attack in southern Kabul highlights the continued presence and threat of the ISIL affiliate in the region.
An investigation into the Qala-e-Bakhtiar explosion is currently ongoing as authorities work to determine the perpetrator and circumstances surrounding the attack.
