Former Denver police recruit recounts the traumatic hazing ritual that led to the loss of his legs.

Victor Moses, who dreamed of becoming a police officer from a young age, suffered a tragic incident during a training exercise as a recruit for the Denver Police Department. During a brutal hazing ritual called “Fight Day,” Moses lost both his legs. Despite informing the department about his sickle cell trait, Moses was forced to continue training even after passing out and experiencing extreme distress. The paramedics cleared him to continue despite his condition, leading to the irreparable loss of his legs and months of hospitalization.

The lawsuit filed by Moses accuses the department of perpetuating a culture of violence, hazing, and training that causes unnecessary injuries among recruits. It also points to the paramedics lying to doctors at the hospital about the extent of Moses’ injuries, which compromised his care. Moses has undergone multiple surgeries and continues to recover from the traumatic incident.

Despite the life-altering injuries, Moses remains supportive of the police and is open to returning to the policing profession in the future. He believes in advocating for the well-being of police recruits to prevent similar incidents from occurring. Moses acknowledges that he will never fully recover from the injuries suffered but aims to use his experience to bring about positive change in police training practices.
