Nathan Colon, an 18-year-old high school senior from Springfield, was arraigned in District Court on charges related to the death of a female pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash on Boston Road. Colon, who showed no emotion in court, pleaded not guilty to charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, causing death, and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation. According to the assistant district attorney, Colon’s driving record was poor and his license was due to be suspended.
The incident occurred when police responded to a 911 call reporting a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on Boston Road. The victim was fatally injured, and Colon was arrested later that night. Police found evidence, including a burn on Colon’s forearm and shards of glass on his clothes, linking him to the crash. The prosecution argued for $10,000 bail due to the severity of the case and Colon’s attempts to flee the scene and blame others.
Colon’s attorney, Dale Bass, requested a lower bail of $5,000, citing Colon’s ties to the community and his part-time job at Chipotle. The judge ultimately set bail at $10,000 and scheduled Colon’s next court appearance for October 3. The teenager’s family, who were present in court, expressed their support for him and his attorney highlighted his previous employment history. Despite the tragic circumstances, Colon’s legal team is prepared to defend his innocence as the case progresses through the courts.
