15-year-old fatally shot in a Maryland high school bathroom

A 16-year-old student shot and killed his 15-year-old classmate in a Maryland high school just two days after a shooting in Georgia left four victims dead. The assailant fired a single shot at Warren Curtis Grant in a men’s bathroom at Joppatowne High School. Warren later died at a trauma center. The suspect has not been charged yet, and police have not recovered the firearm used. The principal described Warren as an amazing young man and emphasized the strength of the Joppatowne community.

The police had prior interactions with the suspect in 10 incidents since 2022. Despite being the suspect’s first day back at school after four days into the school year, police have overwhelming evidence to file charges without interviewing him. The suspect is expected to be officially charged early Saturday.

The Maryland shooting followed a deadly incident at Apalachee High School in Georgia, where a 14-year-old boy armed with an AR-platform style weapon killed two teachers and two students. The teen faces four counts of felony murder, and additional charges are likely. The shooter’s father was also charged.

Sheriff Gahler highlighted the tragic pattern of school shootings and emphasized the need for communities to come together and support one another during such difficult times.
