Esmeralda Pineda, a 24-year-old woman from Sacramento, was found last week severely dehydrated and emaciated after going missing for 12 days in Nevada City, California. Pineda was discovered on top of a canyon near the Yuba River and Sweetland Creek, about 73 miles northeast of Sacramento. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, along with search and rescue volunteers, covered extensive ground in their search efforts before finding Pineda alive. She needed immediate medical attention and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. When she went missing on August 26, authorities believed she might have been trying to return to the Sacramento region. The terrain where Pineda went missing was described as treacherous, with search and rescue volunteers having to rappel into and out of the canyon to look for her. Two deputies were searching the more mountainous parts of the area when Pineda was eventually found. Her current condition is unknown. The quick action of law enforcement and search and rescue teams ultimately led to Pineda’s discovery and rescue.
