The Houthi group in Yemen has claimed to have shot down a United States military drone over Marib. The group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, stated in a video message that the MQ-9 Reaper drone was conducting hostile activities when it was shot down by air defenses. This is the eighth drone of its type to be shot down since the start of the conflict with Gaza. The US military has not responded to these claims or to reports of airstrikes near Ibb.
Previous attacks by the Houthis have disrupted shipping trade through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and targeted ships with links to Israel in support of Palestinians amid the conflict in Gaza. The Houthis continue to strengthen their defensive capabilities to confront ongoing US and UK airstrikes in Yemen.
Recent US military claims include destroying a Houthi-launched drone and a support vehicle, as well as targeting two crude oil tankers in the Red Sea. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for targeting one of the tankers and have carried out other attacks, such as boarding an oil tanker and detonating explosives on it.
The Houthi group has stated that their attacks will only end when Israel ceases its killings in Gaza, where more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began. The group continues to show solidarity with Palestinians through their actions and vows to continue their attacks until their demands are met.
