Forecasters are warning of a potential increase in hurricane activity in the 2024 season, with a low-pressure area near Texas and Mexico in the Gulf Coast showing an 80% chance of forming into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours. Two other potential storm formations also have at least a 50% chance of forming in the next week. Despite a brief lull in storms, experts predict that the 2024 season will be busier than normal.
In the Western Gulf of Mexico, a low-pressure area is causing increased thunderstorms and showers, expected to move northwestward towards the Gulf coast of Mexico and Texas where it could develop into a tropical depression mid-week. Those in the storm’s projected path are urged to monitor it closely.
In the central tropical Atlantic, storms are showing signs of organization and a tropical depression could form in the next few days, moving westward at around 10 mph. It has a 40% chance of forming within 48 hours and a 60% chance in the next week.
Another area southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, expected to move minimally in the coming days. Although it currently has a 0% chance of forming within 48 hours, interaction with a tropical wave could increase its chances to 50% in the next week.
Overall, the 2024 hurricane season is expected to pick back up after a brief break, with multiple potential storm formations on the horizon.
