The United States has recently informed allies that it believes Iran has supplied Russia with short-range ballistic missiles to use in the ongoing war in Ukraine. While the exact details of the transfers remain unknown, US intelligence findings have confirmed the weapons transfers. The White House has expressed concerns about Iran’s deepening support for Russia and warned Tehran against sending ballistic missiles, stating that such actions would escalate the conflict and lead to more civilian casualties in Ukraine.
In addition to ballistic missiles, Iran has been providing Russia with its Shahed attack drones since autumn 2022, which are considered a significant contribution to Russia’s war efforts due to the damage they can inflict. Russian forces recently claimed to have seized the village of Kalynove in the eastern Donetsk region, as they continue to advance towards key logistics hubs in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine launched a surprise military operation into the Kursk region in August 2022, aiming to set up a buffer zone inside Russia to prevent further attacks. This unexpected move has been praised by Western intelligence agencies, with the heads of the British and American agencies acknowledging that it has changed the narrative of the war and exposed vulnerabilities in Putin’s Russia.
