Israel is currently embroiled in multiple conflicts across the Middle East. In Gaza, the fighting between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing for almost a year, resulting in high casualties and a humanitarian crisis. Hostages have been taken, released, and killed throughout the conflict. Israel continues to launch airstrikes in the region, with casualties reported on both sides.
The conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon has also escalated since October, with daily tit-for-tat strikes between the two sides. The history of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah dates back to the 1980s, with a major war occurring in 2006. Hezbollah has increased attacks on Israel in support of Hamas, but experts suggest that their motivations may also be self-preservation rather than solely aiding Palestinians.
Israel’s long-standing conflict with Iran, which escalated after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, continues to simmer. Both sides engage in a shadow war, with recent incidents bringing them close to direct confrontation. Israeli airstrikes on an Iranian consulate in Damascus and subsequent Iranian retaliation have raised tensions.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen, linked to Iran, have also increased attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November. Many of these attacks are seen as targeting vessels with connections to Israel, the U.S., or the U.K. These actions align with the rebels’ ideological stance against these nations.
Tensions and violence in the West Bank have also spiked, with Israeli forces conducting operations to dismantle alleged terrorist cells. The recent fatal shooting of an American protester against settlement expansion prompted calls for reform of Israeli military operations in the region. Additionally, there has been growing violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, with the International Crisis Group reporting a significant increase in attacks resulting in deaths, injuries, and displacements.
