New York retrial of Harvey Weinstein sees indictment on new sex crimes charges

Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on additional sex crimes charges ahead of his retrial in New York, Manhattan prosecutors announced. The indictment, which will remain under seal until his arraignment on Sept. 18, includes allegations of sexual assaults dating back to the mid-2000s. Weinstein, who is currently recovering from emergency heart surgery, was not present at the hearing.

The new charges come after Weinstein’s 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges was overturned earlier this year by New York’s highest court. Prosecutors have been presenting evidence of up to three additional allegations to a grand jury, including assaults at various locations in New York City. It is unclear whether these new charges will be included in the retrial or handled separately.

Weinstein, once a powerful figure in Hollywood, has maintained that any sexual activity was consensual. Prosecutors have indicated for months that new charges were imminent and are actively pursuing claims of rape within the statute of limitations. Weinstein’s previous conviction was overturned due to unfair testimony allowed by the trial judge.

Weinstein is also facing a 16-year prison sentence in Los Angeles for another rape conviction, with his lawyers appealing for a retrial. The disgraced producer, who helped found Miramax, remains in custody as he awaits his retrial in New York. With new charges and legal battles on the horizon, the case against Harvey Weinstein continues to unfold.
