911 calls from Apalachee High School shooting now made public

Family members of students and staff at Apalachee High School called 911 in a panic during a mass shooting that left four dead on Sept. 4. Mason Schermerhorn, a ninth grader who loved Disney World and LEGOs, and math teacher Cristina Irimie are among the victims being remembered in memorial services. 911 calls reviewed by media outlets revealed the chaos and fear that unfolded during the shooting, with some calls coming from parents worried about their children at the school. Some calls were from officers and even the shooter’s aunt, who became concerned after receiving troubling messages from the shooter. The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, is facing murder charges for the deaths of two students and two teachers, as well as charges for injuring eight other students and one teacher. His father, Colin Gray, is also facing charges related to the incident. The released audio recordings shed light on the confusion and terror that gripped the community during the tragic event. The timing of some of the calls indicated that there were concerns and alerts raised before the shooting began, hinting at missed opportunities for intervention. The community is grieving the loss of innocent lives and grappling with the aftermath of this senseless violence.
