EU naval mission strives to rescue burning oil tanker in the Red Sea

A new salvage operation has commenced in the Red Sea to try to rescue an oil tanker that has been burning following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, as announced by the European Union naval mission, Operation Aspides. The Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion was attacked by the Houthis on August 21, leading to fears that the ship’s 1 million barrels of crude oil could spill into the Red Sea. The EU naval mission has been actively involved in creating a secure environment for tugboats to conduct the towing operation to salvage the vessel.

Since the war in Gaza began in October, the Houthis have targeted over 80 vessels with missiles and drones. The rebels have seized one vessel and sunk another, using explosives planted aboard the ships. The Houthis claim they target ships linked to Israel, the U.S., or the UK to pressure an end to Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza, but many of the ships attacked have no connection to the conflict. The EU naval mission is working to prevent any further environmental damage and ensure the safe salvage of the burning oil tanker.

As the salvage operation continues in the Red Sea, international efforts are underway to bring stability and security to the region amidst ongoing conflict. The EU naval mission’s involvement highlights the importance of cooperation and coordination in addressing maritime security threats and protecting vital waterways like the Red Sea. Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of the salvage operation and efforts to prevent further attacks on vessels in the region.
