UN Worker Killed by Israeli Sniper in West Bank amid Middle East Crisis, Israel Reports Missile Attack from Yemen in Israel-Gaza Conflict

UN employee Sufyan Jaber Abed Jawwad was shot dead by an Israeli sniper on the roof of his home in the northern West Bank, leaving behind a wife and five children. This incident comes amidst escalating violence in the West Bank, with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, highlighting the unprecedented levels of conflict and risk in the region.

The killing of Jawwad follows the recent death of US-Turkish activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who was shot dead by the Israeli military while protesting settlements in the West Bank. Eygi’s funeral in Turkey drew a large crowd, including members of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s party, who have vowed to ensure that her death does not go unpunished.

In the wider Middle East crisis, a missile fired from Yemen hit central Israel, causing no injuries but triggering air raid sirens and prompting residents to seek shelter. Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in at least 14 deaths, adding to the toll of over 41,000 Palestinians killed and 95,000 injured since October 7th.

Amidst the ongoing violence, the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the WHO are providing humanitarian assistance, with efforts to distribute food parcels and administer polio vaccinations in Gaza. The EU naval mission is also working to salvage an oil tanker attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.

The UN and international community continue to call for an end to the violence and a return to peace negotiations in the region.
