A’ja Wilson makes WNBA history with Aces’ victory over Sun

A’ja Wilson made history on Sunday by becoming the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a season during the Las Vegas Aces’ 84-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Wilson reached the milestone with 2 minutes left in the game with a pull-up from the elbow. Earlier in the week, she broke the single-season scoring record set by Jewell Loyd last year.

The win keeps the Aces (25-13) in the lead for the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, giving them home-court advantage in that series. Wilson’s dominant performance, particularly in the third quarter where she scored 14 of her 29 points, played a crucial role in securing the victory.

Connecticut (27-11) remains in contention for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, trailing the Minnesota Lynx by two games. Despite the efforts of Marina Mabrey, Brionna Jones, and Tyasha Harris who all scored in double digits for the Sun, they were unable to overcome the Aces’ strong performance.

Jones, in particular, has been on fire in September, averaging 20.1 points per game on 66% shooting in seven games. Kelsey Plum also made a significant impact for the Aces, finishing with 14 points including a crucial 3-pointer that gave Las Vegas the lead for good in the first half.

The Aces have now won seven of their last eight games and are poised for a strong showing in the playoffs with Wilson leading the charge. Their next game is against the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday.
