A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian arsenal in the Tver region has caused a massive fireball and forced a partial evacuation in western Russia. The attack, which occurred near the town of Toropets, targeted a large arsenal belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defence and resulted in a fire 6km wide. The Ukrainian security services claim that the warehouse contained missiles and artillery ammunition.
In response, Russia’s Defence Ministry stated that air defence units had destroyed 54 Ukrainian-launched drones targeting multiple regions overnight. While no damage was reported in the targeted regions, footage from Tver showed significant blasts and fires. Some residents were evacuated, and power outages were reported.
The Toropets arsenal, which was built in 2015, stores missiles, ammunition, and explosives and is equipped with various facilities. The arsenal also has the capacity to accommodate up to 200 servicemen.
Ukraine has been increasing its drone production over the past few years and is using drones to target military and energy infrastructure in Russia. This recent attack follows a previous drone strike on Moscow in September, which disrupted flights and caused damage. Russia has retaliated with air strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities.
The escalating drone attacks between Ukraine and Russia highlight the ongoing conflict between the two countries and the potential for further violence. The international community will be watching closely as tensions continue to rise in the region.
