A tourist couple drove into the water at a South Carolina marina due to confusion over directions. Employees at the Islander 71 Seafood restaurant and bar rescued the couple, who were in their 60s, from their vehicle. The couple had been following GPS directions after dining at the restaurant. One of the bartenders, Johnny Himmelsbach, who was a former lifeguard, immediately jumped into the water to save the couple while another employee assisted and alerted first responders. The vehicle was recovered by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team the following day. The general manager of Islander 71 praised Himmelsbach’s quick and heroic actions, stating that he saved the couple before their car submerged. Himmelsbach’s coworker also commended his actions, calling him an angel and expressing gratitude that the incident did not result in a tragedy. The Isle of Palms Police Department confirmed that no injuries or environmental impacts were reported from the incident. This story highlights the quick thinking and bravery of individuals who acted swiftly to rescue the couple from a potentially dangerous situation.
