Massachusetts Jewish organizations strongly oppose calls to boycott Newton businesses

A prominent Jewish community advocacy organizations including the Anti-Defamation League of New England, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, and the American Jewish Committee of New England have issued a joint statement condemning calls to boycott businesses in Newton following an incident where a Massachusetts veteran allegedly shot an anti-Israel protester who attacked him at a rally. The incident involved Caleb Gannon tackling pro-Israel demonstrator Scott Hayes to the ground, resulting in Hayes’ gun discharging.

Several Jewish organizations have called for boycotting businesses in Newton and Middlesex County, as well as advocating for a travel warning to the area. In response, the ADL of New England, the JCRC of Greater Boston, and the AJC of New England rejected this tactic, stating that it places blame on businesses that are not responsible for the incident or its prosecution. They called for dialogue, empathy for those affected by violence, and an end to senseless violence.

Hayes pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and was released on bail with conditions. The incident has sparked controversy and calls for justice, with various groups expressing divergent views on the matter. Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and State Sen. Cindy Cream have both denounced the calls for boycotting local businesses, emphasizing that businesses should not be punished for events they were not involved in. The community is urged to come together, support local businesses, and work towards reconciliation and understanding.
