The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the United States, has announced that it will not be endorsing any candidate in the upcoming US presidential election, breaking from decades of tradition. The union, which represents around 1.3 million members, stated that neither Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris nor Republican former President Donald Trump made sufficient commitments to ensure the interests of working people were put before big business.
This decision comes as both major parties have been actively seeking the support of organized labor for the upcoming election, which is expected to be highly contested between Trump and Harris. Polling conducted by the Teamsters showed a preference for Trump over Harris among its members, but there was no universal support for either candidate.
The Trump campaign emphasized the strong support of the ex-president within the union, while a spokesperson for Harris highlighted her long-standing commitment to organized labor, contrasting it with Trump’s stance on workers’ rights. Most large labor unions in the US, including the United Auto Workers and AFL-CIO, have endorsed Harris for the presidency.
Despite the historical alignment of labor unions with the Democratic Party, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien’s decision not to endorse a candidate reflects a growing complexity in the relationship between unions and political parties in the US. O’Brien, who spoke at the Republican National Convention, has faced criticism and praise for his approach to engaging with both major parties. The Teamsters’ move to stay neutral in the upcoming election marks a significant departure from its past endorsements and highlights the shifting dynamics of labor politics in the US.
