111 former GOP officials support Harris, citing Trump’s lack of qualification for office

In a surprising turn of events, more than 100 former national security officials from Republican administrations and former Republican members of Congress have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, denouncing their party’s nominee, Donald Trump, as “unfit to serve again as president.” The group, which includes vocal Trump opponents as well as those who had not endorsed Joe Biden in 2020, highlighted Trump’s “dangerous qualities,” such as an affinity for dictators and a disregard for ethical norms.

The letter, signed by 111 individuals who served under Republican presidents like Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, cited Trump’s promotion of chaos in government, praise for enemies, and betrayal of American values as reasons for their endorsement of Harris. The signatories also condemned Trump’s incitement of the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, as a violation of his oath of office.

Notable signatories include former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretaries Chuck Hagel and William Cohen, former CIA Directors Michael Hayden and William H. Webster, and former Gov. William F. Weld of Massachusetts. Despite acknowledging concerns about some Democratic policies, the Republicans expressed greater worry over Trump’s behavior. This endorsement is seen as a significant shift within the party and highlights the growing divide among Republicans over their support for Trump.
