California Fire Destroys Historic 100-Year-Old Lookout Tower

Last week, the nearly 100-year-old Keller Peak fire lookout tower in Southern California was destroyed by the Line Fire, as reported by Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC. Managed by the Southern California Mountains Foundation for the San Bernardino National Forest, the tower was built in 1926 and was a rare pre-Great Depression example in California. The foundation expressed sadness at the loss, as they were preparing for its 100th anniversary in a couple of years. Fire Lookout Manager Shane Harris emphasized the importance of lookout towers in fire management, stating that technology still cannot replace trained individuals with binoculars. Rebuilding the tower at Keller Peak is a decision that falls to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Line Fire, which is currently 50% contained, has burned 39,181 acres east of San Bernardino over almost two weeks. Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, pleaded not guilty to 11 arson charges related to the fire. The swift destruction of the historic fire lookout tower underscores the ongoing threat and significance of wildfires in Southern California, as well as the vital role played by lookout towers in the prevention and management of such disasters.
