Indian Lake in Worcester has officially reopened after being closed for several weeks due to toxin-producing bacteria. The city received test results that showed high levels of cyanobacteria, prompting the closure on August 1. The bacteria concentrations have now decreased to safe levels, allowing the lake to reopen.
The two main genera of cyanobacteria found in the lake were Planktolyngbya and Aphanocapsa, both of which have the potential to produce toxins. While cyanobacteria are naturally occurring, they can be harmful in large quantities. Worcester City Manager Eric D. Batista advised residents and pet owners to wash off immediately if they come into contact with surface scum from the lake. If pets have ingested any of the scum, it is recommended to contact a vet.
The reopening of Indian Lake is good news for residents and visitors who enjoy recreational activities in the area. The city is continuing to monitor the water quality to ensure the safety of those using the lake. With the lake back open, people can once again enjoy the outdoor activities that Indian Lake has to offer.
